War Requiem

A masterpiece in the guise of a musical protest against the horrors of war

23 to 24 june 2017

War Requiem, Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece, decries the horror and destruction of war. Directed by Calixto Bieito, a large choir, a children’s choir, a chamber orchestra, a symphony orchestra, an organist, and three magnificent soloists are performing in this powerful musical that is an ode to peace, and which is just as necessary today as it was when it was performed for the first time after the Second World War.

War Requiem was written to commemorate the reopening of Coventry Cathedral in 1962, which had been razed to the ground when it was bombed in 1940, in an attack that destroyed around 4,000 homes.

Britten’s requiem was immediately considered a masterpiece by critics and audiences alike, and since then it has been performed frequently around the world. In this spectacular production, the theatre will be turned into the cathedral during its reconstruction process.
