A Streetcar Named Desire (1947) stands as one of the pinnacles of American literature and 20th-century drama, an unquestionable classic that remains, more than seventy years after its first premiere, thoroughly modern and contemporary. This masterpiece by Tennessee Williams, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, tells the story of Blanche DuBois, a Southern lady with grandiose delusions, who retreats into a fabricated world, pretentious, haughty, and mentally unstable, and Stanley Kowalski, her rough brother-in-law, a member of the proletarian immigrant class, which at the time was increasing its influence and determination in American society.

In 1951, Elia Kazan directed the film adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire, based on the Broadway play also directed by him, and it won several awards, including an Oscar for Best Actress, for Vivien Leigh’s performance as Blanche DuBois. Now, this new theatrical production coming to the Arriaga intentionally departs from that reference to find its own path in telling this fascinating story.
