Leading 11 dancers, Dada Masilo, one of the best-known young choreographers in South Africa, makes this ballet classic her own, complete with Tchaikovsky’s music, tutus and ballet shoes. Dada Masilo adds a South African air to Swan Lake, and the result is a respectful yet fresher version of the old classic questioning sex/gender boundaries and homophobia in an AIDS-stricken country.
Masilo’s rereading of Swan Lake was acclaimed at the International Dance Biennale in Lyon and the Musée du quai Branly in Paris with its perfect blend of pointe technique and contemporary dance with powerful African roots. Masilo’s solos are just amazing. Swan Lake revisits Tchaikovsky’s unforgettable classic with passion, joy and a great deal of humour.
