London, 1947. Amidst the fog that blankets the city at dusk, a terrible crime occurs. A lonely widow has been stabbed to death in her mansion. The sole suspect is Leonard Vole, a charming opportunist who had a strange friendship with the deceased. To everyone’s surprise, the famous, veteran, and relentless lawyer Sir Wilfrid Robarts agrees to defend the accused. He faces an almost impossible case.
The suspect’s only alibi crumbles when his own wife testifies against him. Romaine Vole, the wife, claims that on the night of the murder, her husband returned home in the early hours with bloodied hands and clothes. After this unexpected “witness for the prosecution,” the trial seems all but over. However, Sir Wilfrid Robarts has not yet had the final say.
