This is History, brutal History. It is a story about people who really existed and passed each other in the street. In the early days of the 1st century AD, the Romans were still invading lands around the Mediterranean. They installed monarchs, savage dictators to bring people under control. They arrived in Judea where a princess, Salomé, secretly supported the rebels who resisted King Herod’s government, the corrupt puppet king appointed by Rome: a man with no morals who governs lawlessly.
John the Baptist, spiritual leader of his people, has raised his voice against the invader and so languishes in the prison at Herods’ Palace. This leads to a New Age. He is a Prophet and states that hope breathes life into all dreams, thereby lighting the Princess’s desire.
Salomé suffers for her beloved John the Baptist. Rejected by him, she becomes a scandalous woman. As an expression of Absolute Sensual Power, Salomé takes her desire for John the Baptist to extremes and this desire spills over into death.
