We all know the “excellent and lamentable tragedy of Romeo and Juliet”: lovers who preferred to die together rather than live apart. Shakespeare says that death is the end of everything, and that Romeo and Juliet died in each other’s arms in the mausoleum in Verona. Now, 400 years later, we are going to demonstrate that Shakespeare was wrong: Ana Belén and Jesús Noguero are going to tell us the real story of this forbidden love.
Juliet and Romeo wake from a long sleep, but they do not recognise each other. Juliet only sees a gentleman in his eighties and Romeo a woman who looks very good for her age. Both believe that they are still a pair of teenagers. Juliet believes that she only fell asleep briefly and is anxiously waiting for her eternal love. Romeo, on the other hand, remembers nothing. And so, what we always believed was the end of the tragedy is the start of the real story of the most famous lovers in the world.
