Written by Lope de Vega between 1613 and 1615, this play was inspired by aristocratic and urban comedies. It offers excellent characterisation, beautiful phrasing, and a highly original structure. El perro del hortelano tells an apparently simple tale, of a woman, Diana, the countess of Belflor, who falls in love with a man of humble origins, her secretary Teodoro. Honour, hope, boldness, the ambition of both and disillusionment run their course until they reach an unexpected denouement.
La Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico is staging this beautiful, warm, funny, dark, luminous, vibrant, rough, sad, happy, aristocratic and popular comedy, which captivates audiences right from the start.
