The beautiful tradition of the pastoral has been kept alive in Zuberoa for many years. The theatre show from the Middle Ages has spread remarkably in the Basque Country and beyond. In 2016, the people of Atharratze Sorholüze performed the Jean Pitrau pastoral initially in their own municipality, later in Otsagabia and finally in the prestigious Le Chatelet theatre in Paris.
The Atharratze resident, Jean Pitrau (1929-1975), spent his whole life working in favour of the small and humble farmers, and was considered to be one of the founding fathers of European agricultural trade unionism. This pastoral, with music by Pierre-Paul Berzaitz, aims to pay tribute to this humanist from Zuberoa, a man of faith and a loyal militant.
OHIBERRITZE is a show that brings together 12 scenes taken from the Jean Pitrau pastoral, performed by the people of Atharratze Sorholüze, and a brief piece called “Dantzaren botzak”, with texts by Ttitika Récalt and stage design by Tehenta kanta taldea and the Juhane Etchebeste dance company.
