The Second Viennese School is one of the major chapters in the history of twentieth-century classical music. Its members made a fundamental contribution: the non-functional use of all 12 notes of the chromatic scale. The twelve-tone technique (or dodecaphony) was developed by Arnold Schoenberg.
The concert will include works by Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871-1942), who briefly tutored Schoenberg; Alban Berg (1885-1935), who employed an idiosyncratic version of Schoenberg’s system, combining it with seventeenth-, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century techniques; and Anton Webern (1883-1945), whose music is characterised by expressive chromaticity and late Romantic richness.
The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, one of the greatest composers in the history of music. To celebrate the anniversary, the Arriaga Theatre will focus on the First Viennese School, a name used to refer to the Classical period in Western art music in late-eighteenth century Vienna, and the Second Viennese School, the group of composers revolving around Arnold Schoenberg in early-twentieth-century Vienna. Beginning with Beethoven himself, one of the most prominent musicians of the First Viennese School and a forerunner of the Second, the programme honours the greatest composers of the Viennese School, especially in the field of lieder.
