A musical piece by Bilbao-born composer Luis de Pablo, commissioned in 2017 by the City of Bilbao on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the fall of Bilbao to the Francoist army in June 1937, in the context of the Spanish Civil War. 80 years after the tragic events, Luis de Pablo has turned the horrors of war into a song of hope, a big NO to war in the form of a cantata for orchestra, cello, choir and soloist.
Beginning with a cello solo – a wailing soldier who does not want to go to war – and with the choir singing of ‘Blessed are the peacemakers’ from the Gospel according to St Matthew, De Pablo’s cantata is grave and deep. A moving manifesto against war and its disastrous consequences.
