A selection of chorales from Bach’s greatest motets and passionsWith James Rhodes, pianist and author, classical music concerts become an immersive experience. Currently – and happily – living in Spain, Rhodes shares his passion with his audience, reaching their hearts and connecting them to the composers he has previously chosen. Rhodes is not just a musician: he is an able populariser who knows how to make classical music available to all, introducing his pieces with wit, humour and fascinating knowledge.
‘During my concerts I talk about the pieces I’m playing, why I’ve chosen them, what they mean to me, the context they were written in.’ This is how Rhodes describes his concerts in the prelude to Instrumental: A Memoir of Madness, Medication, and Music, his best-selling autobiographical book (13th edition, over 100,000 copies sold).
Dusting off classical music and bringing fresh air to the atmosphere surrounding it, Rhodes offers a new look and a subversive, highly personal concert format. In addition to playing music, he gives information about the composers and their historical and social milieus. This successful formula has earned him a well-deserved reputation as an adept populariser of classical music, which he takes to the distant corners of the world, playing in festivals and concert halls, organising tours, and being part of documentaries shot both in Britain and in Spain.
Gifted and charming, James Rhodes truly believes in the power of music. In his concerts, he invites the audience ‘to get away from our mad and furious world and replenish our energy reserves.’
Acclaimed by the critics because of his original style, Rhodes adds his personal touch to every piece he plays at the piano, appropriating the musical experience and offering the audience a first-hand experience too, while stripping classical music of its solemn halo and thus making it more accessible and enjoyable.
This concert’s programme will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven.
