“Fuenteovejuna” portrays a whole age in just a few hours, a few places, a handful of characters: humiliated and rebellious people, old gentlemen unwilling to lose their future, new gentlemen who are learning to be so. They are all experiencing, in a more or less conscious way, the vertigo of witnessing the death of one order and the birth of another. “The world is ending”, says the knight commander. His certainly is. But which world is being born in the attack on the Casa de la Encomienda?
