Psychiatrist Martin Dysart gets the most difficult commission of his career: he must treat a young man who has committed a dreadful and brutal act. The boy, Alan Strang, has been arrested for having prised the eyes out of half a dozen horses he was looking after in a stable. This starts a detective-style investigation with touches of psychoanalysis where the psychiatrist must work out what led this boy from a good family, who had never been in any trouble, to commit this type of crime.
Equus (1973) is just as disturbing and courageous as it was half a century ago, an adventure that invites the audience to delve into the most complex labyrinth of creation: the human mind. The play is a tough reflection of the patterns that guide our behaviour, in a materialistic society where fears of helplessness in a mystifying universe fight fanaticism, and it makes us face our own fears, leading us into a life blinded by routine, with no room for passion. Equus is a song for freedom and, in the opposite sense, raises the alarm on how exalting these natural instincts can lead us to atrocity and madness. It is a passionate text that takes the actors to their very limit and keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.
