EL ZOO DE CRISTAL

by Tennessee Williams

When you have a masterpiece, it's not about proposing a different story, but rather a new one.

Written in 1944, The Glass Menagerie is the first play premiered by Tennessee Williams, one of the most prominent playwrights and writers of the 20th century in the United States, and it was soon adapted for the screen, like many of his other dramas. A precursor of American psychological realism and a witness to the decadent and oppressive Southern society, Williams masterfully captured the themes of heartbreak, sexual, racial, and social repressions with subtle and torrid depth in this cruel and perverse world. The Glass Menagerie received numerous accolades, including the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Now, under the stage direction of Natalia Menéndez (she has also been in charge of the adaptation), the Teatro Arriaga takes on this play as its next theatrical project. The proposal aims to create a production that reflects the American 1930s, breaking away from conventional approaches and moving towards a freedom that Tennessee Williams desired and that we understand today. From this perspective, we can better approach the poetic reality he proposes and express more vividly and penetratingly everything this play offers, or at least try. It is not about creating a different story, but rather a new one. This new production of Teatro Arriaga will also be offered in Basque, from March 21 to 23, 2025.
