A re-reading of one of Lorca’s last plays, a tragicomedy about the passing of time.
THE CRAZY 20s IN ARRIAGA
This is the first time that Pablo Remon (Los mariachis, El tratamiento, 40 años de paz) has directed a text not written by himself. And he has chosen Lorca, no more and no less. And from Lorca, he has chosen Doña Rosita la soltera o el lenguaje de las flores, one of Lorca’s last works, written in 1935, which tells the story of a provincial woman who becomes engaged to her cousin, who must emigrate to Argentina. She waits for him, pure and simple. “It seems that nothing happens”, says Pablo Remon, “but what happens is that time passes”.
Remon’s is a free version, an annotated version, as the title entreats, a distillation in which the director focuses precisely on that suspended time and that aroma of provincial Spain at siesta time, that Spain of the plains that he knows so well. “It’s a kind of B-side of the canonical Lorca tragedies, where the adversary is time, where we see how time is sweeping away the ideals of youth”.
A free version, yes, but at the same time it preserves the essence of Lorca’s work.
