The wonderful soprano from Valencia, Carmen Romeu, together with the pianist Albert Nieto, pay tribute to Victoria de los Ángeles, one of the great Spanish voices of all time. «While Callas was the great dramatic artist, Victoria was the most accomplished singer. She was my main model, well, she was a model for everyone«. This is how none other than Teresa Berganza referred to her. In 2023, taking advantage of the anniversary of the centenary of the birth of Victoria de los Ángeles, Carmen Romeu will perform a delightful repertoire that includes pieces by Schubert, Debussy, Puccini, Albéniz, Toldrà, Montsalvatge, Alicia de Larrocha, García Abril, Piazzola, Albert Guinovart, Ovalle, Moustaki, as well as popular songs.
Pianist Albert Nieto explains the reason for this tribute: «One of the performances that impacted me the most was the one I was fortunate to witness in the Patio de los Arrayanes in the Alhambra, an idyllic enclave where the voice of Victoria de los Ángeles penetrated the heart of a young pianist. Since then, the memory of that magnificent voice singing Fauré’s melodies has been a constant in my life. Therefore, I felt the need to commemorate Victoria de los Ángeles on the centenary of her birth and to extol her great vocal legacy both for those who were lucky enough to hear her live and for those who did not have the opportunity to be enchanted by her stage presence. Her musical mastery was inseparable from the kind and humble person, who never wanted to be in the limelight or to receive tributes. Now I want to offer her mine in gratitude for that distant concert and for the countless hours I have enjoyed her voice«.
