Some of the most important musicians in the American Jazz scene: searching for the essence

16 november 2021

Black Art Jazz Collective brings together some of the most important musicians in the contemporary American jazz scene. The ensemble was founded in 2012 by Johnathan Blake on drums, Wayne Escoffery on tenor saxophone and Jeremy Pelt on trumpet; created to celebrate Jazz and its history, with a focus on hard bop and the contemporary sound typical of the 50s and 60s. The band therefore pays homage to the great musicians of the past, but also continues the evolving tradition of Jazz with a body of work that remains firmly rooted in today’s modernism.

The Black Art Jazz Collective is rounded off with James Burton III on trombone, Victor Gould on piano and Rashaan Carter on double bass. Over time, Mark Whitfield Jr. replaced Blake on drums. Their latest album, Ascension, was released in June 2020 and it could be said that it seeks and finds the essence, because rather than exploring new musical horizons, it preserves the North American jazz tradition of the 1960s, from Wayne Shorter to Herbie Hancock, from Miles Davis to John Coltraine.
