As One is a chamber opera in which two voices, Hannah Before (baritone) and Hannah After (mezzo-soprano), share the part of one sole transgender protagonist. The three-part narrative comprises fifteen songs; with empathy and humour, they revisit Hannah’s experiences from her small-town youth to her university years on the west coast, and finally to Norway, where she is surprised by what she learns about herself.
As One is a performance about self-discovery and the search for true happiness, presented through the eyes of Hannah, a self-critical, at times self-absorbed, amusing, intelligent human being in need of answers. Hannah is trans, and this opera is her own odyssey from youth to adulthood; a universal human story that teaches us the importance of being true to ourselves.
