The concert programme Los talentos perdidos de la República (The Republic’s Lost Talents) is a homage to the intellectual and artistic trends which were curtailed when the Spanish Civil War broke out in 1936. Beyond the incalculable damage caused by murdering artists (such as the composer Antonio José), the exile of some of the country’s soundest talents led to the philosophical wasteland which characterised the postwar period in Spain.
According to the violinist Cibrán Sierra, this led to a cultural substrate “with such aggressive mediocrity that is still in its death-throws today.” Other intellectual and musical impoverishments meant that music by authors who suffered this backlash or went into exile, such as María Rodrigo or María Teresa Prieto, did not see the light of day for many years. This recital intends to bring some of those works to the public eye, alongside the people who composed them.
